The cross-border freight volume of the China-Laos Railway exceeded 18 million tons
According to the official website of China State Railway Group Co., Ltd., as of March 10 this year, the cumulative volume of cross-border freight transported exceeded 18 million tons. This vital steel artery connecting China and Laos is contributing to the high-quality economic and social development of the regions along its route, and its role as an international gold corridor is becoming increasingly prominent.
Over the past four years, the types of cross-border freight transported by the China-Laos Railway have expanded from more than 10 items such as fertilizers and general merchandise at the beginning to more than 3,800 items including electronics, photovoltaic products, and cold chain fruits. Cross-border freight transport now covers 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in China, and reaches 19 countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative, including Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and Myanmar. The operating modes of freight trains have also become increasingly diversified, with the regularly operating "Lancang-Mekong Express" international freight train and the "China-Laos Railway + China-Europe Railway Express" and other new international transport models continuously improving the efficiency and quality of freight transport.
Data shows that in 2025, 5.46 million tons of cross-border freight will be transported, an increase of 14% compared to 2024; since the beginning of this year, an average of 15,000 tons of cross-border freight have been transported daily. The volume of imported goods has been steadily increasing, with high-quality products from Southeast Asian countries such as rubber, durian, and mangosteen being continuously transported to China via the China-Laos Railway and then distributed throughout the country. Simultaneously, Chinese machinery, household appliances, textiles, and photovoltaic products are also rapidly transported to Laos via this railway, radiating to neighboring countries and promoting regional trade and production capacity cooperation.
In recent years, the railway department has continuously optimized transportation organization and customer service, strengthened coordination with customs and other departments, implemented rapid customs clearance and transit models, and improved the level of cross-border logistics facilitation; it has also actively developed the "door-to-door" and full-process logistics service model of the China-Laos Railway, helping to effectively reduce overall social logistics costs.
